Windows 11 will warn you if someone's snooping

Ever had that uncomfortable moment working in a coffee shop or on the train, when you’re sure someone’s glancing at your screen?

It’s not just paranoia — shoulder surfing is real. Whether you’re replying to emails, reviewing confidential files, or managing client data, it’s natural to want your screen to stay private.

The good news? Microsoft is working on a new feature for Windows 11 that could help with exactly that.

Meet Onlooker Detection

This upcoming privacy tool is called Onlooker Detection, and its name says it all. It’s designed to detect when someone is trying to peek over your shoulder and give you a heads-up.

It builds on Windows 11’s existing Presence Sensing technology, which already knows when you step away from your device and can automatically lock or dim your screen. You might know it as part of Windows Hello, Microsoft’s secure sign-in system.

But this new feature takes things a step further.

If Windows 11 thinks someone is lurking nearby, it could:

  • Automatically dim your screen to make it harder to read

  • Send a subtle notification to alert you

  • Or do both — quietly but effectively protecting your privacy in public

The goal is clear: hands-free, real-time screen protection from potential snoopers.

What You’ll Need for It to Work

This isn't just a software upgrade — it depends on your laptop’s hardware too. Specifically, you’ll need a device with something called Human Presence Detection (HPD). This is a sensor that can detect when someone is near your screen.

You’ll typically find HPD in newer laptops, especially those powered by Qualcomm, AMD, or Intel chips. If you’re not sure whether your current device supports it, you can check by going to:

Settings > System > Power & battery

Look for options related to presence sensing or human detection.

Without the right hardware, this feature won’t work — even with the latest version of Windows 11 installed. But for businesses purchasing new laptops, this could become a must-have spec in the near future.

Why It Matters Now More Than Ever

With more professionals working remotely, from coworking spaces, cafes, airports, and even park benches, digital privacy in public is a growing concern.

Think about it:

  • A single exposed spreadsheet could reveal sensitive financials

  • A leaked client email might violate privacy policies

  • A stolen login screen could be all it takes for a cybercriminal to gain access

These are the moments when subtle features like Onlooker Detection really shine. And with Windows 11, Microsoft is pushing toward smarter, more human-aware devices.

What Else Is New in Windows 11?

This feature is just one of many ways Windows 11 is prioritizing user experience and security. From built-in ransomware protection and advanced biometric sign-ins, to tighter integration with Microsoft Defender and AI-driven features like Copilot, the platform continues to evolve.

As these features roll out in future builds, it’s clear Microsoft isn’t just making Windows 11 more powerful — they’re making it more personal, private, and secure.

While Onlooker Detection hasn’t been officially released yet, it has already appeared in preview builds. So, if you're a business that relies on secure, mobile workflows, now's the time to start thinking about how this — and other Windows 11 tools — can better protect your team.

Don’t Rely on Features Alone — Build a Cybersecurity Culture

While new privacy features are great, they’re only one part of a much bigger picture. A truly secure workplace also needs:

  • Up-to-date security software

  • Strong access controls

  • Awareness training for staff

  • Regular evaluations of potential vulnerabilities

Windows 11 is giving businesses more tools to stay safe — but without the right strategy, even the smartest tech can fall short.
